Perito Moreno and El Calafate: essential excursions in Argentine Patagonia

When you talk about Patagonia, it is impossible not to automatically think of Perito Moreno, one of the most impressive glaciers on the planet and one of Argentina's most precious jewels. That is why we are going to start this article by telling you about the main excursions in this tourist attraction.

El Calafate is the closest starting point to the Perito Moreno glacier. To reach the entrance to this natural wonder, you will have to travel along a road for about an hour and a quarter, a route that you can do with an organized tour. The wait is totally worth it. The Perito Moreno can only be described as something unique.

Once there, you have to take a bus (included with the ticket) that takes you to the starting point, where you can begin to walk along the various walkways that allow you to see the glacier from different points. The walkway tour is what is included in the general entrance to Perito Moreno, but you can add other experiences such as a Minitrekking or the so-called Big Ice, with which you will walk on the glacier, or do the navigation that will bring you even closer to Perito Moreno.

But since you're probably coming to a place so far from home, you're not just going to see Perito Moreno, are you? If you're wondering what to do in El Calafate and its surroundings, keep reading.

This region of the world is undoubtedly a paradise for trekking lovers. Just under three hours north of El Calafate is El Chaltén, home of the famous Fitz Roy. Here, there are countless routes for all levels. Our recommendation is to reserve several days for this destination, since the weather is unpredictable, but if you don't have much time, you can take the Full Day El Chaltén tour, so you don't miss out on seeing this impressive destination.

You can also make the most of your visit to El Calafate crossing to the Chilean side of Patagonia and visit one of its most famous tourist spots, Torres del Paine National Park. To get to Torres del Paine from El Calafate without too much hassle, as with El Chaltén, you can book a day tour, which will take you to the essential points of the park. If your goal is to divide your vacation days between the Chilean and Argentine sides of Patagonia, you can also travel to Puerto Natales from El Calafate by land.

And in your free time in El Calafate, what can you do? Simply stroll along its main street, enjoy its delicious craft beers and indulge yourself in the exquisite Patagonian lamb.
